Batu or Sthayee Nritya (Furious Dance)
This
dance is called "Batu Nritya" by some dance
gurus and "Sthayee Nritya" by some others.
There is no great difference or scriptural fault between
this bipartite dance. There is a little difference
in the presentation and imagination of this dance.
"Batu Nritya" opines that Lord Shiva is
the Establisher of Dance. Among the "64 Bhairaba
Murtti" (64 types of furious complexions), "Batuka
Bhairaba" is one. Worshipping of "Bhairaba"
(fury) is confined within Tantra religion. "Batuka
Bhairaba" is described in the Tantra literature.

"Batu
Nritya" is the hardest department of Odissi Dance.
As it is performed at present, the "Batu Nritya"
is a pure dance number beginning with a series of sculpturesque
poses representing the playing of a "Vina"
(lute), "Venu" (flute), "Mardala"
(drum) and "Karatala" (cymbals/claps) as figures
as seen in numerous sculptures all over Orissa and on
the parapets of the Konark Temple. There is no song
accompanying the "Batu Nritya". A permanent
"Ukuta" (style pronounciation) of a particular
rhythm is recited according to the process of instrumentation
and different kinds of articles or pieces are added
to create different types of dances. Every piece of
dance is pared in its end to come back to the permanent
"Ukuta". |
